Networking

Networking is where Ubiquiti and Unifi got its start. It is certainly the beefiest part of the Unifi offering and there are hundreds and hundreds of different products available for purchase. The networking offerings break down into these broad categories:

  • Cloud Gateways and Routers

  • Switching

  • WiFi

  • Accessories

UniFiCT, located in central Connecticut, has been installing and managing a variety of UniFi Network installs over 7 years from residential, remote offices, small business and non-profits.

  • No License Fees Required

  • Integrated Remote Management Interface

  • Flexible Firewall Rules with Easy to Understand Implementation

  • Hotspot Portal

Cloud Gateways

In order to leverage the Magic of Unifi’s GUI networking management system, you must have a Unifi Gateway in your network, or pay an outside provider to host the Unifi Gateway system. The gateway can be on one of Unifi’s Cloud Gateway devices or can be loaded on any extra computer system you have laying around. We do not support a software only gateway solution.

Most of the Unifi Gateway solutions include the Unifi Console Software as well as an embedded router to bring Internet from your provider, into your network. The cost of these solutions run from  $149 to $1,999 and vary depending on the amount of horsepower in each box, the availability of built-in POE ports, dual WAN options and whether the gateway has embedded WiFi 7.

There are even dedicated routing solutions which will require a Unifi Cloud Console only device to manage the network. Sometimes it just comes down to your personal preference.

  • No License Fees Required

  • Plug-and-play site management

  • Compact, WiFi Integrated, Large Scale or Enterprise

Switching

Unifi currently has 44 different switching solutions available from 5-ports to 48-ports and from $29 to $3,999. Suffice it to say, you can probably find what you need from their list of switches. Our expertise does not extend up into the enterprise level of switching so our recommendations will generally run less than $599 per switch. It depends on whether you need POE, POE+, POE++, or even the non-standard POE+++. And then do you want switches with cool LED lighting throughout all the cabling?

Of course, everything is about speed these days, and of course, Unifi supports high speed fiber connections. You can purchase switches with 1Gb, 2Gb, 10Gb, 25Gb, and 100Gb connections. You can even purchase switches that pair up with their high availability Cloud Gateway Solutions so should a piece of hardware fail, the other hardware can step into the gap with very little downtime.

We can help you identify your cost of lost opportunities to help you decide how much investment should be made on hardware that “cannot” fail or how many additional pieces of gear you should have stored on a shelf in a closet for “cold swaps”.

UniFiCT will work with your team to design the full solution, new cable runs, rack locations and optimal equipment selections. We can assemble the equipment, run your cables, and populate the network rack with a clean and neat, professional solution.

WiFi

Unifi now has 30 different WiFi Access Points (APs) for you to choose, ranging from $99 to $1,999. For most small businesses, these APs are affordable enough to allow optimal placement in every office and several in each open bullpen environment.

There are also special duty offerings for mesh networking, point to point WiFi between buildings or simple WiFi extenders.

If you need WiFi and small hub hybrid solutions, the In-wall product line is for you. Put one of these in each office and they also provide 4 network ports, with one of them being POE.

Most of their products work indoors only, but they have a selection of units that can handle the elements, allowing you to provide WiFi outdoors.

Again, like many of the Unifi products, the use of a Cloud Gateway or Unifi Console is required for these WiFi APs to be provisioned and managed. They will run just fine without the console, but to make any changes to the programming or to allow regular, automated channel scans etc. the Cloud Console needs to stay running.

We will gather requirements from you as well as office blueprints and then using tools provided by Unifi, we will design our your WiFi networks to eliminate gaps in coverage.
